Interpretation of Hepatitis B virus serological test

We know Hepatitis B virus has 3 antigen and 3 antibodies

Antigens are:
1.       HB sAg (surface antigen)
2.       HB eAg ( envelop antigen )
3.       HB cAg (core antigen , present on the nucleocapsid protein )
Antibodies are:
1.       Anti HBc IgM / HBcAb
2.       Anti HBs IgG / HBs Ab
3.       Anti HBe IgM / HBe Ab
Among these antigen and antibody we found all in serological test except HBcAg.

Interpretations of serological markers:
  • ·         HBsAg is the indication of active, chronic infection and convalescent carrier
  • ·         HBeAg in blood indicates active replication of virus and the patient is highly infectious
  • ·         HBsAb is indicates person with immunity following infection or vaccination.
  • ·         HBcAb IgM in blood indicates surest marker of active infection because it also positive in window period.
  • ·         HBeAb IgM in blood indicates recovery and its low transmissible.
